[KLQRP] NVIS balun

Knightlites;

I received a nice note from Don Wilhelm wherein he pointed out that I'd
been a little casual with my statement that "most any core" would work
for the balun on the NVIS antenna.

Don is quite right. Actually, a range of cores will work, those with
permeability of 10 to 40 and possibly some others. However, different
companies use different colors to indicate the difference between
ferrite and iron cores as well as the permeability , so I should have
been more definitive and specified permeability rather than referring to
colors.

The point is that for a current balun we want a good bit of impedance,
and the higher permeability will give us that. The higher we go, we
begin to limit frequency range, however, so some of the newer really
high permeability cores would not be suitable.

Truth be told, I'm not sure a balun is even necessary, but I included it
on my antenna just to limit standing waves on the coax. For short range
QRP work, that may not be necessary. We probably could have quite a
discussion on that subject.....
